Subject: Help me to understand...

I realize as the administrator of the Toyota Mods group I am usually the
last person to know anything, but maybe someone can help me here.

I started noticing quite a few MR2 mailing list members posting to the
TM list lately. Now, I am excited about inviting qualified, competent
members of that list to join us in our efforts here, but I have this
stubborn side of me that likes to know what's going on when I am
supposed to know.

A few examples of what I am talking about:
-cal@fins.lanl.gov posted a followup to a question posted to
both the TM and MR2 lists (the "MR2 death" thread), and also
	posted another separate question.
-scott.stone@m.cc.utah.edu posted a followup to the "MR2 death"
	thread.
-lanceh@sa-cgy.valnet.com posted a followup (same thread).
	-rhsiao@pgh.legent.com posted a query on MR2 setups.

Now, I completely understand the followups. When a query is directed at
more than one list, it seems reasonable that a person reply to both
lists to provide information to everyone that saw the query. What I
don't understand is the folks that are just directing questions to a
list of which they are not members. I don't want to step on any toes,
but I do want to encourage these folks to either join the list or to
limit their questions to the lists in which they have membership. This
seems like a reasonable request.

The other thing is that I am confused about how this started happening,
since I've not ever seen it before, and have now seen 5 different
examples in the last week. If you have any clues, let me know.

Just trying to stay on top of things...

I was wondering if anyone out there has purchased any of the following
suspension components for their MR2:

Springs
Thicker anti-roll bars
strut-tower braces
urethane bushings
or Tokico or HKS adjustable shocks
(discs - breaks)

I've done what I can to my stock non-turbo 91' engine and I was wondering
if anyone had any suggestions on my first suspension component purchase(s).

I'm currently running on 15" alloy rims with 205/50 fronts and 225/50 in
the rear. I was quite surprised at how much the car's ride hight had risen
considering it was only a plus one modifcation from the 14" rimms.

Any comments?

It's not really a multi-link, but a semi-trailing arm suspension. An
STA acts a lot like a swing-arm with *really* long arms. Anyway,
another difference between this setup and the BMW setup is that the
diff on the car is mounted to the frame, whereas the 90 degree bend on
the BMW is mounted to the axle. Enough torque on the Supra diff might
serve to rip the diff off the frame (yeah, right) but I don't think it
can serve to raise the frame relative to the suspension.

Hey, don't scoff! The 500HP '88 (I believe) Supra Turbo in that
issue of Turbo magazine 6 or so months back apparently cracked the rear
H-member on the car because of the torque the engine was pumping out.
Sounds pretty similar to what you're describing. :)

Well, Friday night didn't go as well as we'd hoped. Unfortunately, when
my driver told me the car was oversteering, I assumed he was right, so I
tightened up the front sway bar quite a bit. Unfortunately, he was
already pushing, so I just exacerbated the problem. In other words, he
hit the wall twice simply by coming out of the corner too fast! The car
still finished fourth, but I think that's going to be the end of that
particular racing effort. We may take that car out a time or two more
if we get bored, but my driver is in the finishing stages of getting an
8 cylinder sportsman car put together, and I'm trying to get my business
online, so we both have other distractions. Plus, we figured it was
costing us about $40 each per Friday night, so we decided to start
saving some money.

We probably will bring the car back out on August 19, when they have the
school bus figure 8 race! Who could miss that?

BTW, current business plan is to introduce a prototype business in about
30 - 60 days. This will be merely an shadow of what it will be, serving
only the US and Canada (until I learn import/export) and offering a
rather limited range of suppliers (maybe just AEM.) In case you were
interested...

Hi there.

I was leaving a carpark last night and drove past a Toyota 'Soarer'.

Decals on the side said it was a 'Twin cam 24 EFI' motor.

Looked a lot like a 2-door cressida of the 87-88 vintage (Well, Cressida
is what we call them here). Would almost pass as a 'luxury' supra. I
thought it was a pretty nice car. 24 Valve engine should have a bit of
poke too (Same engine as supra?).

Anyone know anymore about this (Where's the Jap car expert!)

Cheers,
Craig.

I second that!

Actually, 1G-GTE is only 2 liter engine, but it has 2 (rather small)
CT12 turbochargers giving it 210hp@6200rpm and 203lbft@3800.
This engine made its debut in 1985. Before that, most Soarers
came with 1G-GE engines which is the non-turbocharged version
of the same engine (as you might have guessed). That was
the lightest inline 6 ever made before 1982, and it gave
a respectable 150hp@6200rpm, 134lbft@5600.

> >Looked a lot like a 2-door cressida of the 87-88 vintage (Well, Cressida

Soarer was meant to be a luxury sports car, which explains
why most of them came with automatic transmission.
Actually, I believe that the 1G-GTE came with ONLY automatic
available.

Both Supra and Soarer had mostly same engine choices available, but
the G-series was dominant in Soarers and M-series in Supras.

OK, I think Ive gotten passed my "must have new Supra or new RX-7" phase
(I don't wanna be in that much debt) so I'm going to put some money into
my '88 Supra Turbo.

First, I'm going to have it looked at, I think it might be leaking a little
oil. Also, the clutch may need to b replaced soon. I was thinking I
might as well do the timing belt too (I'm at 81k miles now and as far as
I know (bought the car used at 65k miles) the timing belt is the
original).

Question: On my old '80 Supra, there was an adjustment on the clutch
pedal arm which allows you to adjust where it "grabbed". Is there
anything like this on the type III Supras? (I can't find my Haynes manual!)

In addition to new rims, I will be going for the HKS PowerFlow. I
will also be going for the HKS EVC.

I am also considering the PFC-FCON. I'm not sure if I'd really need
it. I don't plan on upping the boost past 12 psi. Does the PFC-FCON
do much for improved low rpm power and/or < 14 psi of boost? Also,
didn't someone have a problem with the PFC-FCON? (was it you Ehab?)

One more thing, when I take it in to have some of those things looked
at/done, I was thinking of having them check the compression. I don't
know to much about this stuff...any ideas on what a good compression
figure would be for an '88 Supra Turbo with 81k miles on it? If it's
kinda low, what can I do about it?

Thanx for any info/advice/etc...
-Brian

Get a thicker head gasket and make it lower, then turn the
manual knob on your EVC-I up a bit. :)

	Hi Brian,
Put a daul friction clutch, not cheap but worth it. Do the time belt now, it
will brake with more power under the hood. Change all belts too at the same
time.
I think you can adjust the clutch as you descrbed.
I suggets the K&N air filter with adapter, it is supposed to flow more air
and filter better. EVC... Great.
The PFC-FCON does not improve low end. It only works when the boost passes 5 psiand it richens the mixture from idle all the way to 20 psi. If you get it, you
can safely gor to 14-15 psi. If you do not want to do that, then you're wasting
your money.
Your Toyota dealer can tell you the compression(I forget). If you have to
replace the head gasket, got to a HKS metal one and add .5 mm of thickness to
allow for the higher boost(15 psi).

Hope this helps, Ehab.

the Supra in Japan III generation had the 2.5 turbo Charged motor
which i thought was the 1G-GTE... thats wrong ?
I have a phamplet that says its a 1G-GTE 2.5 litre Turbo Charged...
Or they went with a smaller twin turbo motor for the Soarer ?

Or its an early model year version ?

Or what ?!?!!

Just what was shown in OnTrack and AutoWeek - looks like quite the beast!

Ummm... Can someone verify these "shops" or something for me...

The first is in Florida (Nudge Chris)
The shop is like called "Playful Toys" or something to that effect
and they do high performance mods for Toyotas

The second is in New York or so...
R&R Racing or something to that effect...
They do high performance conversions for the 4AGe including
    turbo set ups...

apparently there is another guy in NYC that does 4AG Hopups and turbo
systems for them. apparently he's known for the street racing and such
on one of New Yorks "street racing" places. In NYC there is a 1/8 of a mile
drage strip...actually its a 1/4 mile street but they only race 1/8 of mile and there is a Local Toyota club. Apparently this "Toy club" has
a weekley grudge match against the Buick Grand National Clubs and
their starlets beat the GN by 1/4 of a second on the 1/8 mi track.

I've posted this before but this guy down here really insisited that he
KNOWS and is gonna BUY a car from NYC thats a modified starlet with a 4ag turbo
however he's not telling who and where and how he can get it...

Oh.. I know the racing stories and stuff is true cause that was verified by HKS
and such... and the street racing does happen..just dunno the shop guys...

Electromotive TECH-II system. My mechanic has put these in
various cars around here and had tremendous success.
(although it is expensive! particulary so if you have a
perfectly good ECU..which you don't!). This puppy gives you
direct-fire (no distributor), and most importantly...
COMPLETE control over all engine functions... it drives the
spark plugs, injectors and connects to all sorts of sensors.
Doing this will enable you to control fuel mixture/timing
accurately and even handle timing retard if you decide to add
a turbo/nitrous system or whatever! It has a PC interface
for setting the parameters (appeals to the computer-geek in
me!)

Just my drooling thoughts.....
(dead ECU = excuse for more power!)

Actually... in order to work, the TECH II *MUST* have full
control over the engine (ie. must replace the stock ECU).
As for who could do this....around here (Winnipeg, MB)
I would go to Jackson Autosport and get the best service
money can buy....you might try calling the people at
Electromotive and see if they can recommend anyone.
You WILL want someone who does quality work...there
is a fair bit of engine/sensor re-wiring required so
the person who does it has to know what he/she's doing
or you will have no end to your electrical problems!

Sorry this isn't much help!

Summit carries VDO. I don't know how their prices compare on those,

Chris,

I figureed with my much stiffer TRD susp. and less
weight trans. to the front, my rear's could be doing
a little more of the braking.

But are you saying this is automatically compensated for
with the stock prop valve?

Yes, my front's don't lock at the same time. This may
be because of the 1/2" heigh increase on the right
side. Still wondering If I'll swap the TRD Eibachs for
Adjustable Ground Control units.

Marc,

Interesting, didn't think I'd actually find some with this
on an MR2. So it works uh? The tilton sorta doesn't appeal
to be because it's limited to 7 positions. Whereas the others
seem to be able to reduce pressure in a more infinite manner,
turning the wheel.

Would you reccomend this? Would it help braking distance much
going from a stock susp. to TRD/Eibach springs, and TRD/KYB struts?

It's extremely stiff, with very little dive under braking. My
thought is that the rears are being underworked now.

How do these animals handle in the wet? We get A LOT of rain down here.
Tried the Aquatreads, GREAT in the wet, not so hot when it's dry.

I'm running Yokohama AVS Intermediates in the stock 185/60 14 size on my '88
supercharged MR2. Dry grip is very good, and wet grip is also suprisingly very
good. For this car, these are the tires I autocross on, as well. While I
don't feel turn is all that sharp or crisp, the tires give good indication of
what they're doing both tactally and audibly. And of course, dry performance
will get better as the tread wears. I paid $77/tire for the 185/60 14 from
Tire Rack last December. I bought a set of 4 Bridgestone Blizzaks at the same
time, stock size also, mounted on steel wheels, and had the AVS's mounted on
the factory alloys. I do think the performance for the price ratio is very
good. I'd be inclined to call these a very good value.

I certainly haven't found many tires that give satisfactory performance in both
the dry and the wet. My TVR 280i came with European Goodyear Eagle NCT's on
it, and my girlfriend's Ford Escort GT has Goodyear Eagle GT's on it. Similar
tires, very different cars. I also remember driving VW GTI's factory-shod with
Eagle GT's. I like the performance of the this tire in the dry, but wet road
performance, regardless of platform, was not very good. I recently spend some
time in a friend's second generation Mazda RX-7 with Bridgestone RE-71's.
Again, very nice dry pavement tire, buy not as secure as the AVS in the wet.

I was surprised by the performance of the Yokohama A-008R's in the rain. They
were surprisingly good. I had to drive home 1.5 hrs in the rain from an SCCA
autocross. I thought I was going to be in for quite a long ride, but the soft
compound, almost treadless A-008's stayed firmly planted at highway speeds, and
through some corners where I experimented (very cautiously; I'm a wimp in the
rain) to see just how much grip was available. Hmmm... Wasn't there a recent
string discussing using these on a daily driver...?

The difference between the two soft compound A-008 offerings. One, I believe
the R2, is the softer compound. This tire is designed to heat up quickly in
the short times/distances of autocross events. The other tire, the R, is not
as soft, and is suitable for longer, sustained high-speed events like Solo 1.
This is the tire I use on my '76 TVR 2500M.

The A509's I'm using are by far the best wet/dry compromise tire I've used.
They are Awesome in the wet (until the tread is too shallow) and are really
pretty good in the dry, particularly when the tread gets just a little too
shallow for wet driving...

This isn't a performance mod but hey....

While looking through my Performance Products catalog I noticed that
they sell aftermarket power door lock kits for Toy trucks. As my brother
and I are both interested in power locks we figured we would go for the
4-door version as all we want are the actuators anyway.

We don't want the buttons - just hook them up to our Alpine alarm system
so the doors are locked automatically when you arm the alarm (keychain
remote) and unlocked when you disarm the alarm.

The question is ... has anyone used these? Comments? Anything
better/cheaper?

The package is listed as:

Wolf Automatic Door Locking System
... blah blah blah ...
Includes 2 sealed Swiss Universal units, hardware, wiring and
instructions.
2DR $96.50 US
4DR $134.50 US (I assume this one would have 4 actuators?)

I like the fact that these kits don't delete the stock knobs so
you can always open the doors manually if they die.

Comments welcome!

Has anyone heard of the "Rancho PowerFlow Exhaust system"?

This system seem really neat because they don't have a muffler.
The system splits into two pipes right after the catalytic converter
all the way to the tips. There is a section of "dented" pipe in each
side that are described as "Audio-Wave Sound Cancellation chambers"
which have no internal components to break or wear out. They advertise
that this system bolts to the stock hangers (for Trucks - Performance
Products catalog), giving you a throaty, mellow sound and reduced back
pressure (smog legal in all 50 states). Do these things actually work?
Seems like a super idea....I would expect MUCH less backpressure with
2 pipes and NO muffler packing material.

They don't give any performance gain figures though..... strange.
The price is $209 US from Perf. Prod.

They also sell a free-flow catalytic converter. Are these any good?
($97 US from Perf. Prod.)

This can be tricky since most manufacturers set the fuel pressure so
that the injectors are running at their minimum duty cycle at idle,
and are on fully at WOT. If you up the fuel pressure you will gain
extra range at the top end, but you may also run massively rich at
idle since the minimum duty cycle is limited by the mass/current draw
of the injector valve (typ 1 ms is about as short as you can get as I
recall) which gives you about a 30dB dynamic range.

Fred,

>From what I have found with the tricks to find HP in the 4AGE, the
stock injector can have the pressure bumped a small amount (~10%)
without impacting the quality of the spray pattern. One other way
you can do this is to "modify" the stock regulator case dimensions
through careful application of broad faced punch and HAMMER!

Given that adjustable fuel pres regulators are not considered legal
in some race groups, this has proven to be an effective (cost and performance)
alternative.

I personally Run the Holly Blue for my Corolla,
Although I belive I should be running the Holly Red.
The Blue starts off minimum at 6Psi or something while the Red is suited
for "Dual carb setups" so it can be easily set at 3.5psi

I Tried the Bosch before and it turned out to be flakey. It heated up too
fast and overheated to me and gave inaccurate readings most of the time.
Although that should not matter as to once you set your PSI it should remain
set...

anyways... a side comment is that I run the Autometer Liquid Filled Fuel
Pressure gague. It tends to give false readings in the sun or when the gague
is under direct sunlight so just belive in your fuel pressure regulator.

without impacting the quality of the spray pattern. One other way
you can do this is to "modify" the stock regulator case dimensions
through careful application of broad faced punch and HAMMER!

Given that adjustable fuel pres regulators are not considered legal
in some race groups, this has proven to be an effective (cost and performance)
alternative.

Fred,

My previous comment assumes that you are running the Toyota EFI system,
where the pressure is ~40 lbs/in2.. (This may not be quite correct,
but its in the ballpark)

Good luck Marc

Fred,

I don't know much about what you're trying to do, but I believe I once
saw in an HKS? catalog a setup which acts as a separate auxiliary fuel
injector which might be useful to you. They might also carry hi-perf
fuel injectors or such. Just an observation....

Another thing I though about (and posted, I believe) was the possibly
of opening the cold-start injector on the EFI 4AGE at WOT. Any hackers
out there care to try this? I have meant to give it a whirl for the
last year but haven't found the time (same old story). I would be
somewhat concerned about the uniformity of the mixture reaching all
4 cylinders.... hmmm......

What I really need is a fuel pressure regulator which raises the fuel
pressure as you approach WOT but leaves it alone at cruise/idle......

Fred, It is also possible to change to a different injector, particulary
a disc type which has better atomization characteristics... These
are made by Lucas and they are a direct replacement.. The flow rates
are higher though. The stock 4AGE injector runs at about 188 cc/min
while the Lucas injectors run at ~240 cc/min...

However, remember that more fuel is only effective when you have more
air flow. This means if you are going to make nearly a 28 percent jump
in fuel flow, you'd better have a plan for burning all of that stuff.
This means the normal: Cams, Headers, Mods to the air flow meter. A
hotter spark is also a good idea if you don't quite get enough air
flow.

Just looking through the latest copy of Circle Track magazine. Ya wanna
be an Indy-car driver? Hey, it only costs money!

Lola Chassis: $400K-$600K
Engines: Not for sale, except the Buick. You _lease_ them for
$1,000,000 per year, pay for all repairs, and rebuild them
	  for $30K-$100K a pop. Whoa!

But good news, campers! Toyota is introducing their Indy engine in
1995!
And since you're already a member in good standing with the TM group,
I have it on good authority that they'll lease you one! So start saving
your allowance now!

Other Toyota Racing news: You know by now that a Celica won the Pike's
Peak climb, right? Same 2.1 litre Camry engine as in the GTP car?
700 hp! Cool, eh? I'd like to hear more about this race if anyone
wants to pass some info along to the group.

Finally, it looks like we're going racing again tonight. You may
remember
that I planned on retiring the car for a while so that I could start my
business and my driver could finish his V8 Sportsman. Well, my driver
calls me last week and says, "Hey, surely you want to finish with a
win!"
Which means _he_ wants to finish with a win.

Well, we start surveying the damage from the last few rough races.
Everything's busted except the engine. 3 bent rims. Bent RR axle.
Bent RF strut. Bent RF control arm. Busted mount on the LF strut.
Shredded tires. How this car finished 4th last race I'll never know.
Bent panhard rod mount. Fuel cell about to fall out the bottom of
the car. Fortunately I have the other Celica parked in the driveway,
and we start canabalizing. Well, we're ready to race, so I hope to have
a good report for you Monday. Stay tuned!

Ok, we were talking about Yokohamas. I know we were talking about the
A008 and the A509. Which one do we agree is the better tire, and for
what applications? Also, which 008, I believe there are several. I've
got a buddy that sells Yok's, and am considering beating him up on
prices
for them. What is the best pricing anyone has gotten on these, from
tire rack or wherever?

Are there any other tires I should be considering?

Thanks!

I got all my Yoko's from Tire Rack, they tend to close out certain models
now and then...

I would also suggest to join Team BF and once you join its a lifetime thing..
I thought I posted this eariler...but I could be wrong as usuall...

Team BF is closing out their R1 series (old series) with most tires of the
Autocross and Roadracing Compound for @$60 per tire....

Think they have a 1-800 number like 1-800-race-bfg or something...

They new Roadracing compounds really Rock... =)

Yup. Yoke AVS is well regarded. I like the Dunlop D40M2. They're being
discontinued, so can be had right now for *cheap*. My next set will
probably be the Toyo Proxes U1, though. They're said to ride a LOT smoother
than the D40's, but offer the same level of dry handling, even better in the
wet. The race compound is currently killing 'em on the track.

I saw the climb on ESPN a Saturday or so back. Those guys have
much bigger balls than is necessary for a normal existance (I
LIKE guardrails). The Celica was awe inspiring, but I think
that wing on my car would get me a few tickets.

On a side note the Oregon State Police are now using Lidar guns.
It is realy wierd having a gun pointed at you while your

Yes, the tm crosspost list was created, and then our loyal Ben Tan,
who promised to keep an eye on the regular Toyota list for interesting
stuff--promptly joined law school, began behaving like a lawyer and
forgot his friends on TM. (Oops, I'd better have my 'net lawyer read
this and make sure Ben can't sue me for libel or anything!)

Subject: Racing Report

Well, we didn't win, but I don't feel (too) bad.

The race (if you can call it that) was more of a mud-slog. There
was a moderate rain which served to soak the track, then they had
two figure 8 races, one of which was a _school_bus_ figure 8!
Believe it or not, those things handled incredibly well. No turn-
overs or impacts (much to the disappointment of the fans!) but they
manage to get mud all over the track. The regular figure 8 drivers
came out after that, and they only exacerbated the problem.

Our race started 37 drivers(!) and we started 18th. Tim got caught
behind a wreck in the 4th lap, and was down to about 25th before he
got back into the race. He steadily made his way to the front, and
found a comfortable position behind the leader. Well, the flagman
gives crossed flags (which is supposed to mean half-way at our track)
and the next lap brings out the white! If the track would have been
dry, this wouldn't have been a problem, but they were in the mud and
in heavy lap traffic. Tim stayed behind him until the exit from
turn 4, coming down to the flag, and gained a full car length on the
leader in the last 150'. It looked like the other guy shut his
engine off the way the Celica was blasting him. At the finish the
leader (in a SR5 Corolla, btw) was ahead by maybe a coat of paint.

It was that race, however, that allowed me to understand the differ-
ence between my driving and Tim's. I push the car much harder. I can
turn laps consistently faster. Tim wins more races. I was usually
going for the lead in about the 5th-6th lap, no matter where in the
field I started. Unless he sees a huge opening, Tim rarely takes the
lead before the 5th lap from the end (15 lap race) and doesn't mind
winning in the last lap or two. Something here for aspiring racers
to grok on a while.

From: Gary Gitzen
Subject: 87 Celica cooling fans
To: tm@su102a.ess.harris.com
Date: Mon, 22 Aug 94 7:55:17 PDT

Hi All,

I recently noticed two marginal overheat conditions in my 87 Celica GT,
3S-FE, 5spd & A/C. Both times it was while climbing long hills at
slow speeds. For those in the S.F. Bay Area, CA-9 up to Skyline (CA-35);
and Mt. Hamilton Road. Mt. Hamilton is a 4000' climb in about 15-20
miles of slow twisty road, with the last 2000' or so in the last very
few miles.

Both times, the car cooled down quickly once it reached the top.
It was not able to dissipate the heat generated while climbing.
Only one fan, the radiator fan, was running steadily.
The A/C evaporator fan was coming on only with the A/C compressor.

"Sounds normal" you say? The electrical schematics show quite clearly
that _both_ fans should come on when the water temp switch opens, so
something was clearly wrong. I speculated about a bad SPDT relay in
the fan circuit. but the relay tested good. Something was engaging
that relay, marked "A/C Fan Relay #3" in the schematic (but identified
as "A/C Fan Relay #2" in the pictorial and on the relay box cover).
Hmmmm....... the documentation doesn't match the vehicle, and has
internal inconsistencies.

I opened up the bottoms of both relay/junction boxes involved in fan
control and compared them with the detailed schematics in the wiring
diagram manual. They didn't match. Instead of a wire running from
the coil of relay #3 to connector 2A-6, there was a wire of a different
color connected to the coil; and a wire of the correct color and function
connected to connector 2A-8. There was no connection between them.
Nothing in the manual showed use of 2A-8 or that different wire color.
I suspect an undocumented engineering change was made for some reason.
Whatever it was, it stopped that second fan from running.

The solution was simple: cut that incorrectly colored wire and run a
new wire to 2A-8, which returned the vehicle to the original electrical
configuration. When that overtemp switch opens now, both fans run.

So, if you've noticed your 87 (or later?) Celica (Others? The MR2
shows the same schematic) overheating while climbing long slow hills,
and the second fan isn't coming on, suspect the same problem.

Hope this helps someone. Please reply by private mail if it does, and
I'll summarize responses.

Regards,
Gary

toyota-mods again. I still haven't gotten all of my glitches worked
out, so expect a few more delays until I do.
