I realize as the administrator of the Toyota Mods group I am usually the last person to know anything, but maybe someone can help me here. I started noticing quite a few MR2 mailing list members posting to the TM list lately. Now, I am excited about inviting qualified, competent members of that list to join us in our efforts here, but I have this stubborn side of me that likes to know what's going on when I am supposed to know. A few examples of what I am talking about: -cal@fins.lanl.gov posted a followup to a question posted to both the TM and MR2 lists (the "MR2 death" thread), and also posted another separate question. -scott.stone@m.cc.utah.edu posted a followup to the "MR2 death" thread. -lanceh@sa-cgy.valnet.com posted a followup (same thread). -rhsiao@pgh.legent.com posted a query on MR2 setups. Now, I completely understand the followups. When a query is directed at more than one list, it seems reasonable that a person reply to both lists to provide information to everyone that saw the query. What I don't understand is the folks that are just directing questions to a list of which they are not members. I don't want to step on any toes, but I do want to encourage these folks to either join the list or to limit their questions to the lists in which they have membership. This seems like a reasonable request. The other thing is that I am confused about how this started happening, since I've not ever seen it before, and have now seen 5 different examples in the last week. If you have any clues, let me know. Just trying to stay on top of things... Date: Mon, 01 Aug 94 10:40:00 PDT I was wondering if anyone out there has purchased any of the following suspension components for their MR2: Springs Thicker anti-roll bars strut-tower braces urethane bushings or Tokico or HKS adjustable shocks (discs - breaks) I've done what I can to my stock non-turbo 91' engine and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on my first suspension component purchase(s). I'm currently running on 15" alloy rims with 205/50 fronts and 225/50 in the rear. It's not really a multi-link, but a semi-trailing arm suspension. An STA acts a lot like a swing-arm with *really* long arms. Anyway, another difference between this setup and the BMW setup is that the diff on the car is mounted to the frame, whereas the 90 degree bend on the BMW is mounted to the axle. Enough torque on the Supra diff might serve to rip the diff off the frame (yeah, right) but I don't think it can serve to raise the frame relative to the suspension. > Latas, > Botoboy Dan. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx From: abuhr@raptor.eng.ufl.edu Subject: Re: One-piece driveshaft To: danapple@vicor.com Date: Mon, 1 Aug 1994 15:20:29 -0400 (EDT) Cc: toyota-mods@su102a.ess.harris.com (Toyota Mods ML) > the BMW is mounted to the axle. The 500HP '88 (I believe) Supra Turbo in that issue of Turbo magazine 6 or so months back apparently cracked the rear H-member on the car because of the torque the engine was pumping out. Sounds pretty similar to what you're describing. :) Aaron B. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Mon, 1 Aug 94 17:11:03 EDT From: cmyer@su102a.ess.harris.com (Chris Myer) To: tm@su102a.ess.harris.com Subject: Racing Report Well, Friday night didn't go as well as we'd hoped. Unfortunately, when my driver told me the car was oversteering, I assumed he was right, so I tightened up the front sway bar quite a bit. Unfortunately, he was already pushing, so I just exacerbated the problem. In other words, he hit the wall twice simply by coming out of the corner too fast! The car still finished fourth, but I think that's going to be the end of that particular racing effort. We may take that car out a time or two more if we get bored, but my driver is in the finishing stages of getting an 8 cylinder sportsman car put together, and I'm trying to get my business online, so we both have other distractions. Plus, we figured it was costing us about $40 each per Friday night, so we decided to start saving some money. We probably will bring the car back out on August 19, when they have the school bus figure 8 race! Who could miss that? BTW, current business plan is to introduce a prototype business in about 30 - 60 days. This will be merely an shadow of what it will be, serving only the US and Canada (until I learn import/export) and offering a rather limited range of suppliers (maybe just AEM.) This engine made its debut in 1985. Before that, most Soarers came with 1G-GE engines which is the non-turbocharged version of the same engine (as you might have guessed). That was the lightest inline 6 ever made before 1982, and it gave a respectable 150hp@6200rpm, 134lbft@5600. > >Looked a lot like a 2-door cressida of the 87-88 vintage (Well, Cressida > >is what we call them here). First, I'm going to have it looked at, I think it might be leaking a little oil. Also, the clutch may need to b replaced soon. I was thinking I might as well do the timing belt too (I'm at 81k miles now and as far as I know (bought the car used at 65k miles) the timing belt is the original). Question: On my old '80 Supra, there was an adjustment on the clutch pedal arm which allows you to adjust where it "grabbed". Is there anything like this on the type III Supras? (I can't find my Haynes manual!) In addition to new rims, I will be going for the HKS PowerFlow. I will also be going for the HKS EVC. I am also considering the PFC-FCON. I'm not sure if I'd really need it. I don't plan on upping the boost past 12 psi. Does the PFC-FCON do much for improved low rpm power and/or < 14 psi of boost? Also, didn't someone have a problem with the PFC-FCON? (was it you Ehab?) One more thing, when I take it in to have some of those things looked at/done, I was thinking of having them check the compression. I don't know to much about this stuff...any ideas on what a good compression figure would be for an '88 Supra Turbo with 81k miles on it? If it's kinda low, what can I do about it? I suggets the K&N air filter with adapter, it is supposed to flow more air and filter better. EVC... Great. The PFC-FCON does not improve low end. It only works when the boost passes 5 psiand it richens the mixture from idle all the way to 20 psi. If you get it, you can safely gor to 14-15 psi. If you do not want to do that, then you're wasting your money. Your Toyota dealer can tell you the compression(I forget). If you have to replace the head gasket, got to a HKS metal one and add .5 mm of thickness to allow for the higher boost(15 psi). Hope this helps, Ehab. > OK, I think Ive gotten passed my "must have new Supra or new RX-7" phase > (I don't wanna be in that much debt) so I'm going to put some money into > my '88 Supra Turbo. > > First, I'm going to have it looked at, I think it might be leaking a little > oil. Dry grip is very good, and wet grip is also suprisingly very good. For this car, these are the tires I autocross on, as well. While I don't feel turn is all that sharp or crisp, the tires give good indication of what they're doing both tactally and audibly. And of course, dry performance will get better as the tread wears. I paid $77/tire for the 185/60 14 from Tire Rack last December. I bought a set of 4 Bridgestone Blizzaks at the same time, stock size also, mounted on steel wheels, and had the AVS's mounted on the factory alloys. I do think the performance for the price ratio is very good. I'd be inclined to call these a very good value. I certainly haven't found many tires that give satisfactory performance in both the dry and the wet. My TVR 280i came with European Goodyear Eagle NCT's on it, and my girlfriend's Ford Escort GT has Goodyear Eagle GT's on it. Similar tires, very different cars. I also remember driving VW GTI's factory-shod with Eagle GT's. I like the performance of the this tire in the dry, but wet road performance, regardless of platform, was not very good. I recently spend some time in a friend's second generation Mazda RX-7 with Bridgestone RE-71's. Again, very nice dry pavement tire, buy not as secure as the AVS in the wet. I was surprised by the performance of the Yokohama A-008R's in the rain. They were surprisingly good. I had to drive home 1.5 hrs in the rain from an SCCA autocross. I thought I was going to be in for quite a long ride, but the soft compound, almost treadless A-008's stayed firmly planted at highway speeds, and through some corners where I experimented (very cautiously; I'm a wimp in the rain) to see just how much grip was available. Hmmm... Wasn't there a recent string discussing using these on a daily driver...? The difference between the two soft compound A-008 offerings. One, I believe the R2, is the softer compound. This tire is designed to heat up quickly in the short times/distances of autocross events. The other tire, the R, is not as soft, and is suitable for longer, sustained high-speed events like Solo 1. This is the tire I use on my '76 TVR 2500M. - Steven xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx From: lupienj@wal.hp.com (John Lupien) Date: Mon, 15 Aug 94 10:44:34 EDT To: Tan Tien Ping , Subject: Re: A509 Cc: toyota-mods@su102a.ess.harris.com (mods) > > I second that! There is a section of "dented" pipe in each side that are described as "Audio-Wave Sound Cancellation chambers" which have no internal components to break or wear out. They advertise that this system bolts to the stock hangers (for Trucks - Performance Products catalog), giving you a throaty, mellow sound and reduced back pressure (smog legal in all 50 states). Do these things actually work? Seems like a super idea....I would expect MUCH less backpressure with 2 pipes and NO muffler packing material. If you up the fuel pressure you will gain extra range at the top end, but you may also run massively rich at idle since the minimum duty cycle is limited by the mass/current draw of the injector valve (typ 1 ms is about as short as you can get as I recall) which gives you about a 30dB dynamic range. However, remember that more fuel is only effective when you have more air flow. This means if you are going to make nearly a 28 percent jump in fuel flow, you'd better have a plan for burning all of that stuff. This means the normal: Cams, Headers, Mods to the air flow meter. A hotter spark is also a good idea if you don't quite get enough air flow. They're being discontinued, so can be had right now for *cheap*. My next set will probably be the Toyo Proxes U1, though. They're said to ride a LOT smoother than the D40's, but offer the same level of dry handling, even better in the wet. The race compound is currently killing 'em on the track. Same 2.1 litre Camry engine as in the GTP car? 700 hp! Cool, eh? I'd like to hear more about this race if anyone wants to pass some info along to the group. Chris I saw the climb on ESPN a Saturday or so back. Those guys have much bigger balls than is necessary for a normal existance (I LIKE guardrails). The Celica was awe inspiring, but I think that wing on my car would get me a few tickets. On a side note the Oregon State Police are now using Lidar guns. Chris xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Mon, 22 Aug 94 08:17:07 EDT From: cmyer@su102a.ess.harris.com (Chris Myer) To: tm@su102a.ess.harris.com Subject: Racing Report Well, we didn't win, but I don't feel (too) bad. The race (if you can call it that) was more of a mud-slog. There was a moderate rain which served to soak the track, then they had two figure 8 races, one of which was a _school_bus_ figure 8! Believe it or not, those things handled incredibly well. No turn- overs or impacts (much to the disappointment of the fans!) but they manage to get mud all over the track. The regular figure 8 drivers came out after that, and they only exacerbated the problem. Our race started 37 drivers(!) and we started 18th. Tim got caught behind a wreck in the 4th lap, and was down to about 25th before he got back into the race. He steadily made his way to the front, and found a comfortable position behind the leader. Well, the flagman gives crossed flags (which is supposed to mean half-way at our track) and the next lap brings out the white! If the track would have been dry, this wouldn't have been a problem, but they were in the mud and in heavy lap traffic. Tim stayed behind him until the exit from turn 4, coming down to the flag, and gained a full car length on the leader in the last 150'. It looked like the other guy shut his engine off the way the Celica was blasting him. At the finish the leader (in a SR5 Corolla, btw) was ahead by maybe a coat of paint. It was that race, however, that allowed me to understand the differ- ence between my driving and Tim's. I push the car much harder. I can turn laps consistently faster. Tim wins more races. I was usually going for the lead in about the 5th-6th lap, no matter where in the field I started. Unless he sees a huge opening, Tim rarely takes the lead before the 5th lap from the end (15 lap race) and doesn't mind winning in the last lap or two. Something here for aspiring racers to grok on a while. Chris xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx From: Gary Gitzen Subject: 87 Celica cooling fans To: tm@su102a.ess.harris.com Date: Mon, 22 Aug 94 7:55:17 PDT Hi All, I recently noticed two marginal overheat conditions in my 87 Celica GT, 3S-FE, 5spd & A/C. Both times it was while climbing long hills at slow speeds. For those in the S.F. Bay Area, CA-9 up to Skyline (CA-35); and Mt. Hamilton Road. Mt. Hamilton is a 4000' climb in about 15-20 miles of slow twisty road, with the last 2000' or so in the last very few miles. Both times, the car cooled down quickly once it reached the top. It was not able to dissipate the heat generated while climbing. Only one fan, the radiator fan, was running steadily. The A/C evaporator fan was coming on only with the A/C compressor. "Sounds normal" you say? The electrical schematics show quite clearly that _both_ fans should come on when the water temp switch opens, so something was clearly wrong. I speculated about a bad SPDT relay in the fan circuit. but the relay tested good. Something was engaging that relay, marked "A/C Fan Relay #3" in the schematic (but identified as "A/C Fan Relay #2" in the pictorial and on the relay box cover). Hmmmm....... the documentation doesn't match the vehicle, and has internal inconsistencies. I opened up the bottoms of both relay/junction boxes involved in fan control and compared them with the detailed schematics in the wiring diagram manual. They didn't match. Instead of a wire running from the coil of relay #3 to connector 2A-6, there was a wire of a different color connected to the coil; and a wire of the correct color and function connected to connector 2A-8. There was no connection between them. Nothing in the manual showed use of 2A-8 or that different wire color. I suspect an undocumented engineering change was made for some reason. Whatever it was, it stopped that second fan from running. The solution was simple: cut that incorrectly colored wire and run a new wire to 2A-8, which returned the vehicle to the original electrical configuration. When that overtemp switch opens now, both fans run. So, if you've noticed your 87 (or later?) Celica (Others? The MR2 shows the same schematic) overheating while climbing long slow hills, and the second fan isn't coming on, suspect the same problem. Hope this helps someone. Please reply by private mail if it does, and I'll summarize responses.
